Kathleen Clarke wished to take part in the Rising with her husband, but was ordered by the IRB to remain at home and look after the welfare of dependents afterwards - which she did, setting up the Irish National Aid and Volunteer Dependents Association within a few weeks. She later employed Michael Collins as Secretary of that organisation, giving him the base from which he developed his network of support within the Volunteers.
