Beschreibung:

The Rambler's Magazine; or, The Annals of Gallantry, Glee, Pleasure and the Bon Ton London: for the author, and sold by G. Lister [and others], 1784. Volume II only (excluding supplement), 8vo. (8¾ x 5¼in; 219 x 131mm), double column with continuous pagination and signatures for the year, 35 engraved plates only including "The Grand Cricket Match" in the February issue (June issue lacks plates), uncut in contemporary boards backed in green roan. Provenance : [?]J.W. Goldman (without a bookplate but quite probably the copy sold at Hodgson's, 24 November 1966, lot 19 to Epworth for £7-10-0). Publication of this periodical commenced in January 1783 and ceased in February, 1791. At least three plates appear to have been published each month. This copy has 4 plates in the January and May issues, and 3 in all other months (except June). The February issue includes a letter to the editor headed, "The Grand Match; or the D[uk]e of D[orset] guarding the political wicket. A Vision." (p. 73). The imagined match with the Duke at the wicket surrounded by a huddle of admiring French fielders and one native American is also depicted in the plate opposite which is somewhat untypical of this publication in not being of an erotic nature. VERY RARE. ESTC locates only one copy of this volume (University of Illinois). Not in MCC Library. cf. Goldman p. 163 (year 1786); not in Padwick.
