Beschreibung:

A contemporary of Henry Ford, G Edgar Allen, from Englewood, New Jersey, was a carriage builder whose shop was located on West 53rd Street, New York City. He is thought to have been actively involved in automobile manufacture from around 1895 to 1900. No records exist however, and the number of vehicles produced must have been very small. Indeed, this car may be Allen's very first, bearing as it does number '101'. Believed to be the sole example surviving, it is illustrated in The Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1805 - 1942. The car is powered by a single-cylinder, 7.5hp Aster engine, the latter coupled to chain final drive via an easy-to-operate, infinitely variable, friction-disc transmission. Steering is by tiller. The engine appears original in all major respects, though a later Schebler carburettor and fan have been fitted. Suspension is by a single transverse leaf spring at the front and elliptic springs at the rear. The vehicle was acquired by Sir Stirling Moss in July 1989 having previously been the property of an active VCC member. The latter had resisted the temptation to modify the original brake and steering mechanisms for safety reasons, preferring to maintain their originality. At the time of acquisition, the car was in a remarkably good state of preservation, and since 1990 has been on display at the Brooklands Museum. It has not been used on the road since then and will require re-commissioning. An important representative of the 19th Century's pioneering days of automobile development, this unique car is offered with substantial history file containing correspondence, assorted invoices, photographs, etc.
