The Proceedings at Large of the Court-Martial, on the trial of the Honourable Augustus Keppel, Admiral of the Blue. Held on Board his Majesty’s Ship the Britannia, On Thursday, January 7th, 1779, title spotted, [Todd 30e], for J.Almon, 1779 bound with The Trial of Frederick Calvert Esq; Baron of Baltimore, in the Kingdom of Ireland, for a rape on the body of Sarah Woodcock; and of Eliz. Griffinburg, and Ann Harvey, lacks title, some ink staining, [for William Owen], [1768], together 2 works in 1 vol., contemporary half calf, upper cover detached, lower joint splitting, spine ends and corners worn, rubbed, folio *** When Keppel fought against France in 1778 as commander of the western squadron off Ushant he believed that the 4th Earl of Sandwich (then First Lord of the Admiralty) would be glad to see his defeat. In the same action Keppel believed that his subordinate commander Sir Hugh Palliser's disregard for his orders cost them a decisive victory. Palliser in return pressed for a court-martial of Keppel on charges of misconduct and neglect of duty. Keppel was acquitted of all charges, partly in thanks to Edmund Burke's campaigning.
