The Paris Auto Salon 1955 ALFA ROMEO 1900C SPRINT COACHWORK BY GHIA Chassis No. AR 1900C 02186 Grey with black roof and black and white interior Engine: four cylinders in line, twin overhead camshaft, single Weber carburetor, 1,884cc, 110bhp at 5,500 rpm; Gearbox: manual four speed with synchromesh; Suspension: front independent by double wishbones and coil springs, rear live axle with coil springs and locating arms; Brakes: hydraulic drum. Left hand drive The 1900 Alfa Romeo of 1950 marked a turning point for the marque. Gone were the straight eight and supercharged projectiles that had written so much motor racing history. Now Alfa replaced them by a modest four cylinder engine housed in a modern style pressed steel saloon body shell. But still that engine possessed twin overhead camshafts and had enormous potential for development, and the saloon's brakes and suspension were ranked with the best. Even in those austere days, there was room in Italy for glamour and excitement in automobiles. In the following year the 1900C appeared, its platform chassis slightly shorter in wheelbase than the original saloon. Depending on whether the new owner intended road or competition use, engines were supplied in progressively fiercer stages of tune. The 1900C provided the dynamic new school of Italian designers with the perfect base on which to create coupe bodies of unsurpassed elegance and the stylists at Ghia, Touring, Pininfarina and Vignale eagerly took up the challenge. Although Pininfarina and Touring between them accounted for the bulk of 1900 Sprint production, other carrozzeria could not resist the lure of such a delectable package. This example is the work of one of Italy's most illustrious coachbuilders, Carrozzeria Ghia. Despite the death of founder Giacinto Ghia in 1944 and the wartime damage to its Works, the Turin based company was soon enjoying renewed success thanks to the talents of designers such as Giovanni Michelotti, Pietro Frua, Mario Boano and the designer of this unique car Giovanni Savonuzzi. Commercial director Luigi Segre was convinced of the importance of the United States as a potential market for Ghia, and a number of their 1950s designs, such as the one offered here, show a transatlantic influence. Apparently this Ghia bodied car was sold new at the Paris Salon in 1955 to a member of the Spanish Royal family and copy paperwork shows that it was owned by ex-Titular Conte J. Huarte Beaumont Pamplona of Camino Sarriguren, Spain. Painted in grey with a black roof and a black and white interior, the car is presented in original condition having covered, we believe, only 50,000 miles from new. It is still fitted with the original sixteen inch Nardi steering wheel and polished Borrani wire wheels. Following the car's import into the United States in 1990, it has been preserved in original condition in all respects and in 1999 it won Best Unrestored Car at the Concorso Italiano at Quail Lodge. Offered with copies of Italian registration documents dated from 1957 and a California title, this Alfa has an interesting history and should make a welcome addition at any Alfa meets. WITHOUT RESERVE
