(Folio) 31.7x21.2 cm. (12½x8½") later half calf and marbled boards with more recent rebacking. First English Edition. One of the most important early treatises on ornithology; first printed in Latin in 1676. Contains the first systematic classification of birds of the world. For this English edition Ray corrected the text and augmented it with three new treatises on falconry, songbirds, and the art of fowling. Nissen 991; Wing W2879 Lot Amendments Condition: Binding rubbed; lacking 3 plates (XVI or XVII and the two rare falconry plates), perhaps a dozen plates with old repairs, most small but a few sizable, closely trimmed; some foxing, a few ink notes in an early hand; still very good.
