Beschreibung:

The Napoleon of Notting Hill Author: Chesterton, G.K. Place: London & New York Publisher: John Lane: The Bodley Head Date: 1904 Description: 300, [2] ad pp. With 7 full-page illustrations by W. Graham Robertson plus map. (8vo) 18.8x12.5 cm (7½x5"), green pictorial cloth decorated and lettered in black; top edge stained black, other edges untrimmed. First Edition. There has been speculation that the setting of the book prompted the date chosen for the setting of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. Set in a nearly unchanged London in 1984, it is, in effect, set in an alternative reality of Chesterton's own period, with no advances in technology nor changes in the class system nor attitudes. It postulates an impersonal government, not described in any detail, but apparently content to operate through a figurehead king, randomly chosen. Lot Amendments Condition: Light sunning and wear to cloth, touches fraying along edges and ends of spine; faint age-toning to pages, some scattered foxing, binding solid; very good. Item number: 328655
