THE MEDALS OF COL S BOGLE-SMITH CB. CBE. EISERNEN KRONE etc. A Military Companion of the Bath, Military Commander of the British Empire, Queens South Africa medal with five clasps. Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 & SA 1902. Engraved naming to Col S Bogle-Smith 1st Dragoon Gds. (The medal is the correct size.) A 1914/15 Star impressed naming to Col S Bogle-Smith Remount Service. British War medal later engraved issue to Col S Bogle-Smith. (Again in the correct size-with naming used by RAF and late issues in style). Victory medal impressed to Col S Bogle-Smith with MID emblem. An Austrian Eisernen Krone 11 Classe, with case of issue (damaged but complete). A neck order of the Austrian Empire, with blue and gold ribbon. British War & Victory medals named in correct style to Lt J A Bogle-Smith. India General Service medal bar Afghanistan NWF 1919, impressed naming to Lt J.A.Bogle-Smith 1.K.D.Guards. General Service Medal bar Iraq, impressed naming to Lt J.A.Bogle-Smith. Colonel Stewart Bogle -Smith was Educated at Eton (1878) as was his son John A Bogle-Smith 1915. Both of whom served in the 1st Kings Dragoon Guards. Col Smith was born 11/7/1859. Commissioned Lt from Militia into the Worcester Regt 28/2/1883. Lt 1st D Gds 29/2/1888. Capt 1st D Gds 17/2/1892. Mjr D Gds 14/6/1898. Adjudant Yeomanry Cavalry 15/111895-31/12/1900. War Service 1907 Army List: Col (HP) Operations in the Transvaal, Orange River Colony and Cape Colony. Despatches LG 29/7/1902 CB Queens Medal with Five Clasps. Up to this time in the Army Lists he is shown as Col S B Smith. In the Regt History Capt Bogle-Smith married a local girl (1895) lived at Woolverston Park, Ipswich. During the Boer War Major S Bogle-Smith was a Prisoner of War to the Boers 14th February 1901. Lt (J A) Bogle-Smith was mentioned in the Regt History during actions in the Khyber Pass, as occupying a conical hill and driving the tribesmen off. Five D Gds Officers were awarded the CB for services in the Boer War, including S Bogle-Smith. L Gazette 31/10/1902. MID x 2 for the GT War 4/1/17 and 5/7/19 CBE In 1903 when the Regiment returned to England, Lt-Col Bogle-Smith took over as the Colonel of the Regt. He handed over Command in June 1906. In 1908 The Emperor Franz Josef ordered awards to be made to Officers and men from his ( British Regiment). This was his Diamond Jubilee Year. Colonel B-Smith was awarded the Eisernen Kronen 2nd Class. In the Gt War Col B-Smith served with the Remount Service. Awarded CBE. Lt J A B-Smith was restored to the establishment February 1925. A silver plated K D Gds figure , standing on a marble plinth. It is possible Lt J B Smith was the model, used for the sitting. A plaque underneath records thats it was presented for their 25 wedding anniversary in 1920. A second plaque records Lt James Anstruther Bogle Smith France 1915-18, Afghanistan 1919. 'Well Done'. Both plaques are silver with HM London 1919-20. With the medals is the original receipt for purchase from D Hall of Baldwins 1962 for £32.10s.0d don stated the QSA as (renamed) not as a replacement. Col Bogle-Smith died in 1922, his wife applied for his medals at that time. MIC. See Illustration
