The Master of the Ovals (French, active mid-17th Century) A series of 37 drawings of scenes from the Old Testament one with inscription 'Claude' (on the verso of Moses striking the rock ) and one with inscription '50 pieces par Corneille no. 61' (on the verso of Joseph's brothers return to their father Jacob ) traces of black and red chalk, pen and brown ink, brown wash, and touches of bodycolour (some of the whites oxidized) on buff prepared paper, 27 with watermark clock and maker's name I. CUSSON, eight with watermark horn in a shield and letters R&C [?], sixteen inscribed ovals, all with pen and brown ink border lines 11 x 13¾ in. (28 x 35 cm.); and slightly smaller (37)
