Title: The Marvelous Land of Oz Author: Baum, L. Frank Place: Chicago Publisher: Reilly & Britton Date: 1904 Description: 287 pp. With 14 (of 16) color plates and numerous black and white drawings by John R. Neill. Original rose red cloth stamped in navy blue, silver and green; pictorial endpapers in dark green on light-green stock (faded to tan), recased with plain brown cloth spine and corners, original spine cloth perished. Custom clamshell box. First Edition, Second Printing. With the very rare "Author's Edition" bookplate tipped to the rear of the frontispiece, signed by L. Frank Baum. This plate was affixed to copies ordered directly from the publisher, not sold at retailers. Second printing with July, 1904 publication date below the copyright notice on the verso of the title-page; plate facing page 23 captioned "Old Mombi Puts Jack In The Stable." Binding variant 'C' with the full title on front cover in blue, embellished with silver outlines. Bienvenue & Schmidt, p.21. Lot Amendments Condition: A well worn copy, crudely rebound, lacking two plates, several others heavily chipped, page edges rough; offered for the extremely rare "Author's Edition" signed slip which is tipped to the verso of the frontispiece by the cloth tape repairing the front hinge, the tape just touching the printed border at the top left, the slip is creased vertically at the center and lightly where the tape attaches.
