Title: The Lady of the Lake Author: Scott, Walter Place: Edinburgh Publisher: John Ballantyne Date: 1810 Description: 433 pp. (8vo) 8¼x5¼, full red morocco gilt, all edges gilt. With a fore-edge landscape painting featuring a sailboat with its reflection on the lake and a man walking in the foreground. The fore-edge painting is signed "J.E." and dated 1810. This is the work of a post World War II fore-edge painter, who signed and dated his creations in emulation of James Edwards (1756-1816, the first to popularize fore-edge paintings); it has been definitively demonstrated by scholars that his paintings are not the work of Edwards. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Stanwyck. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine and edges worn, front free endpaper reinserted, rear hinge cracked; a little toning and a scattered foxing internally; fore-edge painting with a small rubbed area in the foreground; else very good.
