Analysis of Surveyor 3 Material and Photographs Returned by Apollo 12. Washington: GPO. 1972. NASA SP-284. viii, 295 pp. 10 x 8 inches. Original pictorial wrappers. A first in space exploration history: the return of long-term surface-exposed equipment from the moon. Apollo 12 enabled the inspection back on Earth of selected parts from the Surveyor 3 spacecraft after some 31 months of long term exposure in the lunar environment. Astronauts Charles "Pete" Conrad and Alan Bean landed approximately 600 feet from the Surveyor and were able to traverse that distance on their second EVA of November 19-20, 1969. This report has over 100 photographs taken by the astronauts of Surveyor's condition on the surface and post-flight images of returned equipment. Conrad and Bean removed the complete television/image camera, lunar surface scoop, spacecraft tubing - both painted and unpainted, and various electrical cables. The study of the exposure to cosmic and solar radiation, temperature extremes, and impacts from micrometeorites on these returned parts has helped improve spacecraft designs since the early 1970s. INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the front cover by ALAN BEAN: "Photo by Alan Bean."
