THE HORSE -- ST. PAUL, Horace, of Ewart Park, Northumberland (1729-1812, compiler). A stable book entitled 'Farriery', including one complete printed work: [BURDON, Willam]. The Gentleman's Pocket-Farrier; shewing how to use your horse on a journey. London: printed for John Bell and C. Etherington, at York, 1772. 12° (120 x 76mm). Engraved frontispiece. Contemporary marbled wrappers. Not bound separately with the rest of the sammelband but inserted in front pocket. This edition unrecorded in ESTC. Also parts or fragments of 5 other works, the more complete being: BARTLET, J. The Gentleman's Farriery: or, a practical treatise on the Diseases of Horses ... sixth edition . London: printed for J. Nourse [etc.], 1767. 8°. Engraved frontispiece, 2 plates (one folding). (Bound without Aa6-8, and Bb1). [ and :] LAFOSSE, Philippe Étienne. Observations and Discoveries made upon Horses, with a new method of shoeing ... from the last edition of the French ... second edition. London: J. Nourse, 1759. 8°. 4 folding plates (3 loosely inserted, without any text leaves after K2). Together one work and 5 part works in one volume, 8° (173 x 110mm. and smaller), with extensive manuscript marginal notes throughout; 60 plates (25 folding) from the printed works and elsewhere; approx. 74 pp. of ms notes in a single contemporary hand with a quantity of loose ephemeral material, the majority ms notes. (Plates with some shaving to the images.) All within a contemporary late-18th century green morocco wallet-style binding with flap, titled in gilt on the spine, with a built-in folder at the front containing the loose ephemeral material and two inserted 'volumes' bound in uniform comb-marbled paper (front inner hinge of the morocco binding split, splits to flap, some scuffing). Provenance : Horace St. Paul (compiler, armorial bookplate). Rare example of an 18th-century gentleman's stable book or horseman's 'aide-memoire' made up of printed extracts, plates from a wide range of contemporary works, and copious notes including manuscript 'receipts' for the ailments of both horses and dogs. The compiler, St Paul, was Colonel Minister Plenipotentiary to Paris and an acquaintance of Samuel Johnson's.
