EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED, engraved general title, 82 full-page engraved plates (illustrating the New Testament), 16 full page engraved portrait vignettes and 76 engraved vignettes on 38 leaves (illustrating the Old Testament), ALL COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, MOST ILLUMINATED WITH GOLD, some bearing the name Robert Peake wood-engraved titles, wood-engraved header to The Book of Genesis, RED RULED THROUGHOUT, small rust-hole on Mm6, affecting text, eighteenth century straight-grained red morocco, gilt rule borders, spine tooled elaborately gilt in compartments, a.e.g., 8vo THE FAIRFAX-IBBETSON-COLE BIBLE. According to an inscription opposite the engraved title, "This Bible originally belonged to the Former General Fairfax of Denton in Yorkshire, the enemy of Charles 1st & restorer of Charles 2nd, it came to Lady Shipbrook by the Death of her Father, J. Ibbetson Esq of Denton in Yorkshire, Elder Brother of Sir Henry Ibbetson Bart., and was given to me by her Ladyship." The recipient was Stephen Thomas Cole and this volume bears his ownership inscription. It has since passed by descent to the present owner. See illustration.
