First edition of the French translation of Calancha’s history of Peru and its native peoples. Calancha, an Augustinian friar, was born into a wealthy land-owning family in Sucre, Bolivia. As he traveled the Andes he became interested in the pre-Columbian history and customs of the region. His work, Crónica moralizada de la orden de San Agustín en Perú, was first published in Barcelona in 1631, translated into French (here) and Latin, and reissued in Peru in 1653. Calancha’s work gathered information on geography and the religions, customs and languages of the natives of Peru and Bolivia. He also speculated on their origins, suggesting a link between them and the Tatars, but through a biblical lens. Two other short works, "Le martyre du venerable père Bernardin Deguisiany" and "Le martyre du venerable P. Alipe" are included in the end, separately paginated.
