Very large historiated initial 'D' cut from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT CHOIRBOOK ON VELLUM [Tuscany, Siena? second half of the 15th century] Miniature 175 x 175 mm., on a part leaf 310 x 245 mm. Christ rowing a boat in a pool, before him a sick man sitting up in bed, at his side another male figure in a blue garment, in a green landscape with blue sky, the letter in red with foliate pattern with coloured leafy extensions on gold ground (gilt slightly flaked). With two lines of music on 4 red-ruled staves, music on verso. Possibly the introit 'Domine in tua' for the first Sunday after Pentecost. This initial may have been made for one of the large choir books in Siena, by an artist belonging to the circle of Liberale de Verona.
