The following eight lots form part of a remarkable collection of eighty guns, pistols and blunderbusses assembled by a country squire named William Palling of Brownshill, which he left to his brother upon his death in 1753, with instructions "that they all may be kept clean". For an account of the Palling Collection see W. Keith Neal & D.H.L. Back, Great British Gunmakers 1740-1790 , pp. 118-120, plates 455-473 A 28-BORE FLINTLOCK TURN-OFF PISTOL BY T. RICHARDS, BIRMINGHAM, DATED 1750 With three-stage cannon barrel numbered 2 and engraved with foliage at the breech, engraved tang, signed border engraved rounded lock decorated with foliage on the cock and tail (top jaw chipped), swelling figured walnut butt (repaired) finely inlaid with silver wire scrolls and dots behind the barrel tang, border engraved iron mounts comprising rounded side-plate engraved with foliage, rococo ornament and a martial trophy, escutcheon engraved with foliage and with a shell above, trigger-guard (pitted), and large butt-cap en suite with the side-plate, and engraved 'William Palling Esqr. Brownshill 1750', Birmingham private proof marks 11 3/8in.
