The following double sided cast aluminium finger signs are being sold by Westminster City Council following the upgrading all of their signposting in the capital as part of the Legible London campaign. Installed in a rolling programme throughout the 1990’s they have guided visitors to the many famous landmarks for which London is so well known., Cllr Robert Davis Deputy Leader of Westminster Council stated; , |London is home to some of the most famous street signs in the world and buyers now have the chance to acquire a genuine piece of the capital’s history. More than 15 million visitors came to London last year and they were greeted and guided to historic locations by signs like these| , Next to each lot is the quantity of each sign being offered in this sale and the highest sealed bids received will buy the lot according to the quantity offered. For example, if there are 12 Buckingham Palace signs being offered, then the top 12 bids will be successful. This May sale will include approximately two thirds of the total number of signs being offered, with the remainder being offered in our October sale. There are also a limited number of cast iron posts available, each with applied City of Westminster plaque (see lot 78) on which the signs were originally displayed. Any buyers who purchase five or more signs are eligible to be given a post on which to display them. Since the heights of the signs vary, it may be necessary to shorten the tops of the posts to accommodate the signs being displayed on them. As an average each post will take 6 small signs, 9.1cms high or 4 larger signs 21cms high, or a combination of both ( see lot 78) , The buyer of each lot will be given a signed Certificate of Authenticity, relating to each sign as well as a letter of congratulation from Westminster City Council.
