THE FIRST PHOTOGRAPH OF JOHN ROWLANDS Glass plate photograph of John Rowlands, aged 15, 65 x 48mm. set in its original oval mount and cardboard frame. (One side of mounted damaged with loss of border); together with a carte de viste of the same image, signed J. Laing photographer Castle Street, Shrewsbury and at Queen St. Wellington, Salop. Verso with later note by Dorothy Stanley "aged 14 years Stanley as a boy in Wales where he was born and brought up". The only surviving image of Stanley as a child, taken in 1856, probably by a travelling photographer from Shrewsbury. Moses Owen, Rowland's cousin was running a small Church of England school at Brynford near Holywell, and when Rowlands left the St. Asaph workhouse (the workhouse register for May 13, 1856 notes Rowlands departure "Gone to his uncle at the National school, Holywell"), Moses took Rowlands on as a pupil teacher, but sent him back to his mother Mary Owen at Tremeirchion near St. Asaph, with a letter asking her to equip him with a new suit of clothes, and to send him back to Brynford school in a few weeks. This is the new suit on the freshly scrubbed Rowlands, ready for his new life as a teacher. (2)
