The Federalist: a Collection of Essays, written in favour of the New Constitution, as agreed upon by the Federal Convention, September 17, 1787 . New York: printed and sold by J. and A. M'Lean, 1788. 2 volumes in one, 12° (155 x 94mm). (Lacking first blank to both vols, some leaves slightly browned.) Speckled brown calf, triple gilt fillet round covers, spine gilt in compartment with morocco lettering pieces, by Riviere & Son (splits in hinges), g.e. Provenance : Ben Pierce (1757-1839, governor of New Hampshire, faded signature on title); C.G. Perry (very faded signature on title); C.G. (unidentified book label) Written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay, The Federalist was a series of essays to convince the New York State electorate to ratify the proposed constiution. Most of the essays appeared in newspapers, the first on 27 October 1787 through to the 77th on 2 April 1788, and the first 36 published in book form on 22 March 1788, the second volume contained essays 37-85 appeared on 28 May, with the last eight essays included before appearing in the popular press. ' The Federalist survives as one of the new nation's most important contributions to the theory of government' PMM 234; Church 1230; Evans 21127; Howes H-114; Sabin 23979
