Successor to the 5 Alpine, and not to be confused with the mid-engined Group B 5 Turbo, the Renault 5GT Turbo kept the road car’s front-engined/front-drive layout and debuted in works Group A configuration. The 5GT Turbo was also used to contest the Group N ‘showroom’ category, which permitted fewer modifications, and for two glorious years it dominated the class. In 1989, works-supported privateer Alain Oreille not only finished 1st in the Group N category of the Monte Carlo, Corsica and San Remo rallies, but also won the Ivory Coast Rally outright, a quite astonishing performance. Alain Oreille continued to campaign the 5GT Turbo in 1990 and secured his second consecutive world title in Group N, the highlight of his season being 3rd place overall in the Ivory Coast event. The Renault 5GT Turbo we offer is one of two entered by Simon Racing in the World Rally Championship’s Group N category in 1990, the other being in the ‘Museum du Patrimonie Renault’. Alain Oreille used this particular car on the Australian and New Zealand rallies in 1990, retiring in the former and finished 10th overall in the latter. The car came back to Simon Racing, where it was thoroughly overhauled and serviced, and at the end of the season Renault Boulogne gave it to Alain Oreille as a gift. The car subsequently spent the following 16 years on display in the Renault Troyes showroom and remains in totally original, as-last-raced condition, complete with its in-period registration and all the old stickers. Its current owner, who is a friend of Alain Oreille, has carefully looked after the car, which comes with two original helmets and racing suits, and its original and current Cartes Grises Françaises. A museum-worthy competition car that helped one of France’s most famous rally drivers to his second World Championship, this well-known Renault 5GT Turbo has featured in Mille Miles Alpine Magazine (No. 66, 2008) and the 1991 Renault publication, Vive le Sport. Son propriétaire actuel, un ami d'Alain Oreille, a pris grand soin de la voiture, qui est accompagnée de deux casques et combinaisons d'origine, ainsi que de ses cartes grises françaises d'époque et actuelle. Voiture de compétition digne d'un musée, qui a aidé l'un des pilotes de rallyes français les plus connus dans son second Championnat du Monde, cette célèbre Renault 5 GT Turbo a fait l'objet d'articles dans Mille Miles Alpine Magazine (n°66, 2008) et dans la publication de Renault en 1991, Vive le Sport.
