Beschreibung:

Da Dongya Gongrongquan ji Taipingyang Yaotu [Map of the East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere and the Pacific Ocean]. Cabinet Printing Bureau, Japan, Showa period, 1941. Japanese WWII-era propaganda map promoting the ideal of a self-sufficient political bloc of Asian nations—led by the Japanese—free from the rule of Western powers. This imperial concept was created and promulgated for western-occupied Asian populations between 1930-1945. It extended across the Asia-Pacific and promoted the cultural and economic unity of East Asians, Southeast Asians, South Asians and Oceanians. The original concept may well have had a pan-Asian ideal of freedom and independence from Western colonial rule at its core, but it was highjacked by militarists and nationalists, who viewed it as an effective policy to strengthen Japan's position and to advance its dominance within Asia. Chromolithographic map of East and Southeast Asia, Australia and the Pacific Ocean, on paper, approximately 1470 x 1440 mm. (Light fading, some fold wear.) Please note that this lot is subject to an import tariff. If the buyer instructs Christie’s to arrange shipping of the lot to a foreign address, the buyer will not be required to pay the import tariff. If the buyer instructs Christie’s to arrange shipping of the lot to a domestic address, if the buyer collects the property in person, or if the buyer arranges their own shipping (whether domestically or internationally), the buyer will be required to pay the import tariff.
