Pembroke) impressed naming, light contact marks, otherwise good very fine (3) Footnote William John Robert Lamie was born in the village of Old Brompton, near Chatham, Kent, on 1 May 1865, and was a labourer prior to joining the Royal Navy as a Domestic 3rd Class aboard H.M.S. PEMBROKE on 22 May 1883, and advanced to Domestic 2nd Class on 25 October 1883. He transferred to the Engineering Branch as a Stoker 2nd Class whilst aboard PEMBROKE on 20 May 1885, and was advanced to Stoker on 26 January 1886. In this rate he next joined the following ships: CALYPSO (November 1886), PEMBROKE (September 1888), DUNCAN (January 1889), WILDFIRE (April 1889), PEMBROKE (June 1890), and GARNET (October 1890) being advanced to Leading Stoker 1st Class on 18 July 1893. He next served aboard the following ships: PEMBROKE (September 1894), Chatham Torpedo Store (October 1894), PEMBROKE (July 1895), Chatham Torpedo Store (September 1895), PEMBROKE I (July 1896), and HAWKE (August 1896). Whilst in the latter ship he was advanced to Acting Chief Stoker on 1 November 1896. He served next aboard PEMBROKE II in April 1897, was confirmed in the rate of Chief Stoker on 4 April 1898 and then joined BLENHEIM (June 1898), and BARFLEUR (October 1898). He landed in China in June 1900 for service with the Naval Brigade and was present at various actions including the capture of the Taku Forts on 17 June 1900. He next joined PEMBROKE II (January 1902) prior to being pensioned ashore 30 June 1903 after 20 years service, having been awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in 1896. He joined the R.F.R. at Chatham on 1 July 1903, and was mobilised on 19 April 1916 but released from active service on 20 October 1916 having passed 50 years of age. His short period of war service, however, earned him the British War Medal.
