The Douglas-Morris Collection of Naval Medals Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, no clasp (H. Ryder, A.B. H.M.S. Sappho) nearly extremely fine Footnote 254 medals to this ship. Harry Ryder was born in Congleton, near Chester, on 1 April 1875 and was a baker before joining the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. IMPREGNABLE on 21 January 1891 when aged 16 years. He was discharged ‘time expired’ on 31 March 1905 having completed 12 years adult service having been twice sentenced to cells, hence no L.S. & G.C. medal. He joined the R.F.R. in April 1905 and served during W.W.I in the following ships: CAMBRIA (August 1914), PEMBROKE I (July 1915), PRESIDENT (November 1915), CORMORANT (January 1916), EGMONT (June 1916), and PEMBROKE I (February 1918) being invalided ashore on 17 April 1918.
