The Douglas-Morris Collection of Naval Medals Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, no clasp (T. McCarthy, Pte. R.M., H.M.S. Naiad) some light graffiti to the obverse field and contact marks, therefore nearly very fine Footnote Entitled to 2 clasps, Cape Colony and South Africa 1901. 250 medals to this ship, 117 with these two clasps. Timothy McCarthy was born 17 March 1880 at St Davids, Cardiff. He enlisted in the Royal Marines in Bristol on 2 November 1898, and following Recruit Training at the Walmar Depot he was posted as a Private to the Portsmouth Division on 17 August 1899. He embarked aboard VERNON (December 1899), disembarked to the Portsmouth Depot (February 1901) and next served aboard NAIAD (March 1901). He landed from this ship for service in South Africa on 17 November 1901, earning the Queen’s South Africa with two clasps, and whilst in the same ship he also qualified for the Africa General Service medal with clasp ‘Somaliland 1902-04’. He was discharged to shore 5 November 1910 having completed his 12 year engagement, not eligible for the L.S. & G.C. medal. He enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve 6 November 1910, was mobilised on 2 August 1914 and served aboard H.M.S. EUROPA, SS CAWDOR CASTLE for passage (May 1915), VICTORY (June 1915) and returned to the Portsmouth Division (November 1916) before being posted to PRESIDENT III (December 1916) for ‘service in defensively equipped merchant ships’. He continued to serve in such ships until demobilised on 27 February 1919.
