Beschreibung:

The Daughters of the Stars - inscribed Author: Crary, Mary Place: London Publisher: Hatchard & Co. Date: 1939 Description: With 2 color plates by Edmund Dulac (4to) embossed cloth covers with leather spine label lettered in gilt. First Edition. Signed and Inscribed by Mary Crary on the front free endpaper, dated March 27, 1940, New York. Laid in are two 8x10” sepia tone photographs. One is a seated portrait of the author in formal wear staring into the camera; photographer Hal Phyfe's name is penciled on the back of the photograph in a block style that he sometimes used. The other photo is of a display window at Hatchards, showing the same portrait photograph of the author and the two illustrations by Dulac. "Publication of this book encountered delays and difficulties because of the outbreak of World War II. Since paper and workmen were fast being commandeered by the British government, the book was rushed into print despite the fact that only two Dulac illustrations were finished" (Hughey). Dulac designed the entire format of the volume, including chapter head and tail scroll designs. Hughey 91. Lot Amendments Condition: Some toning and staining to cloth with darkening to spine, spine label peeling at edges; small Seattle bookstore label on front endpaper; photographs with some light rippling, creasing mostly in margins, a few small chips to a few corners; very good. Item number: 303267
