The Collection of Medals Formed By Dr A W Stott An exceptional D.C.M., M.M. and Bar group of six awarded to Corporal Frank Palmer, 2/5th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, attached 164th Trench Mortar Battery Six: Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (201108 A.Cpl. F. Palmer, M.M., 2/5 Lan. Fus.); Military Medal, G.V.R. with Second Award Bar (201108 Pte., 2/5 Lanc. Fus.-T.F.); 1914-15 Star Trio (3127 Pte./Cpl., Lan. Fus.); Medaille Militaire, extremely fine and a unique combination of gallantry awards to the regiment for the Great War (6) Footnote Ex H. Y. Usher Collection 1975. D.C.M. London Gazette 15 November 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On two occasions when his team and his officers were buried in dug-outs by enemy shellfire, though he had been buried himself, he at once assisted in digging them out and by his promptness undoubtedly saved several lives. When an S.O.S. call was received soon afterwards, though his men were badly shaken, he brought his gun into action under heavy enemy shelling and fired it until the attack was beaten off. He set a splendid example of determination.’ (Attached to 164 Trench Mortar Battery). The group is accompanied by a somewhat lengthier and more detailed recommendation which states that the award was won on the 24th August 1918 at Givenchy. Bar to M.M. London Gazette 7 October 1918. The following recommendation is taken from official records and was initially for the award of the D.C.M. but downgraded to a bar to his M.M.: ‘For gallantry and devotion to duty at Givenchy on the 25th April 1918. He was in command of a Stokes gun which he fired in response to S.O.S. signals under a heavy barrage until his gun was put out of action. He then ordered his team to use their rifles and himself went up to the front line for another gun which he knew to be short of ammunition. He carried this gun back to his own position, mounted it, and continued firing.’ M.M. London Gazette 14 January 1918; Medaille Militaire London Gazette 29 January 1919. Sold with original parchment Certificate for the Medaille Militaire
