The Civil War Campaign Chest of 2nd Lt. John Davis Edgell (1836-1917), Gardner, Massachusetts, including his dark blue wool 53rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment nine button officer's frock coat with lining and velvet-lined collar, sky blue wool nine button vest, officer's kepi or cap, black and gold campaign hat cord, commissioned officer's crimson sash, commissioned officer's burgundy colored sash, two sword belts including one for full dress uniform, pair of black oilcloth sherryvallies or leggings, leather percussion cap pouch, tin shaving mug, U.S. officer's non-regulation "soft knapsack" initialled JDL, two carte-de-visite of 2nd Lt. Edgell in uniform, one inscribed on the reverse New Orleans, LA May 1863, two tin-types and an ambrotype carried to war of John D. Edgell's wife, Sarah A. Greenwood, Holy Bible stamped in gold J.D. Edgell, Edgell's wedding certificate, GAR Awards of Appointment as Aid-de-Camp, all in Lt. Edgell's campaign trunk stenciled in red, Lt. J.D. Edgell/Co. G 53 Reg't/Mass V.M., additional details available on request, trunk ht. 11, wd. 14, lg. 24 in. John Davis Edgell was born in Gardner, Massachusetts, September 11, 1836, and died there March 11, 1925. In 1917, it was noted that he worked for the Gardner Savings Bank for fifty years and at that time served as its President. Educated at Brown University, he was commissioned as 2nd Lt. on September 15, 1862, and evidently detached to serve with the occupation forces in New Orleans.
