Riesener, late 19th century, with shaped fronts and concave sides, inlaid with centre panels of baskets and urns of flowers, quivers of arrows, fruit, eggs and butterflies in stained pearwood, and with a lattice design filled with flowerheads in kingwood, sycamore and fruitwood, finely chased ormolu mounts, bead moulded frames and egg-and-tongue moulded frieze, breche violette marble tops, one stamped by the maker three times HENRY DASSON, the other bearing retailers stencilled title for S & H JEWELL, 132 HIGH HOLBORN, LONDON, each 93.5cm high, 169cm wide, 63.3cm deep The present commodes are based on a group supplied by Henri Riesener for the Royal châteaux of Louis XVI, during the late 18th century. Henry Dasson (d.1896) is among a number of leading 19th century French cabinet-makers who produced commodes inspired by Rieseners most celebrated examples. Henry Dasson who was a gifted draftsman, had studied under Justin Marie Lequien, professor at the École Superieur Turgot. He began his career working with Emile Godeau at Rues des Nonnains-dHières as a manufacturer of bronze works of art and clocks. Shortly thereafter Dasson was recorded at premises in Paris at 106 rue Vieille-du-Temple where he specialised in manufacturing a wide range of high quality furniture and objets dart in the Louis XIV, XV and XVI style, often producing direct copies of well-known pieces. In 1871, Dasson acquired the firm of the ébéniste Charles Winckelsen in 1871 for 14,000 francs, and subsequently exhibited a distinguished group of furniture at the Paris Expositions from 1878 until 1895. By then, the firm gained a reputation for furniture of exceptional quality with fine ormolu mounts. Dasson was made a Chevalier of the Légion dhonneur in 1883 and was awarded the Grand Prix Artistique at the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle. The business closed in 1894 and an auction of the remaining stock was held during the same year (see D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Mobilier Français du XIX Sicle, Paris, 1984, pp. 146-151). Provenance: Formerly from Brocket Hall
