The Booke of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments: and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England . London: Robert Barker for John Bill 1631.
The Booke of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments: and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England . London: Robert Barker for John Bill 1631. 4 o (215 x 158 mm). Ruled in red throughout. (Lacks division titles to Psalms and Apochyrpha, title and some other margins shaved, some spotting and browning.) 18th-century half calf, marbled boards stained red and with painted border and decorated in gold paint with text "The Book of Common prayer printed in the 7 Year of the Reign of Charles the first of our Lord God 1631 With Geneaologies of all the Tribes from Adam and the Blessed Virgin Mary and our Saviour Jesus Christ," back cover with similar decorated border and floral design at center, spine gilt-ruled (rubbed, front free endpaper excised). Provenance : Mr. Lover (signature on rear flyleaf); anonymous owner, Christie's London, 21 March 1960, lot 215; purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 15 July 1960. According to the Christie's description of 1960, "this prayer book is believed formerly to have belonged to William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, it has been in the possession of his descendants for many years. It was apparently bound in this curious manner by a subsequent member of the family. Loosely inserted is a letter from Payne and Foss, written in 1837, to Grenville Penn and referring to the copy which they had bound and cleaned but which through the carelessness of the binder 'the ornamental part is not what was desired.' It appears that this letter refers to the restoration of the binding which certainly seems older than 1837." There is no evidence, internal or external, substantiating the Penn provenance.
