Black letter type: 95mm. Two large woodcuts, one of noblemen and huntsmen with a falcon and dog [Hodnett 892], the other of an angler [Hodnett 897], woodcuts in the text of fishing tackle (hooks, floaters, etc.), woodcut device [McKerrow 25]. (Title-page slightly extended at fore-margin with rule border of margin renewed, small internal repairs without loss, extreme upper corners repaired.) With the TITLE-PAGE OF THE 1496 EDITION (STC 3309), including two woodcuts [Hodnett 892, 1309], tipped in at end (partly defective, with upper section s in pen-and-ink facsimile, stained). 19th-century tan straight-grained morocco gilt, monogram of George Daniel on front cover, flat spine lettered with title (minor rubbing at extremities); modern linen chemise and tan morocco slipcase. UNIQUE COPY of the second edition of the Treatise on Fishing , the earliest printed English work on the subject, and third edition of the Book of Hawking and Hunting . Its charming woodcut of an angler was the earliest illustration of an angler printed in England when it first appeared in the 1496 edition; it is thought to depict the River Ver in Hertfordshire with Sopwell Priory in the background (cf. Buller, Falkus, et al., Treatise of fishing , 2001). The Treatise of Fishing was widely disseminated in both manuscript and printed editions, and it directly influenced later works on the subject such as Mascall's Booke of Fishing , Markham's Pleasures of Princes , and Izaak Walton's Compleat Angler . The Book of Hawking and Hunting was first printed in 1486 at St. Albans without the Treatise on Fishing but with a treatise on heraldry. De Worde reprinted all of these works on gentlemanly pursuits in 1496 and then produced various separate editions into the 16th century. The treatise on hunting is sometimes ascribed in the text (not here) to Dame Juliana Berners. See E.
