The Bill and Angela Strong Medal Collection Six: Commander C. G. Pitcairn Jones, Royal Navy 1914-15 Star (Lt., R.N.); British War and Victory Medals, M.I.D. oakleaf (Lieut., R.N.); Defence and War Medals, unnamed; Russia, Order of St. Stanislaus, 3rd Class breast badge with swords, gilt and enamel, lacking reverse centre, unmarked, reverse with brooch fitting, good very fine and better (6) £500-600 Footnote Commander Charles Grey Pitcairn Jones, Lieutenant, 1915, was mentioned in despatches for ‘Services in the Caspian Sea, 1918-19’ (London Gazette 11 November 1919) and awarded the Order of Stanislaus, 3rd Class with swords (London Gazette 17 February 1920). Appointed Lieutenant Commander in 1923 and Commander (Retired) in 1937. At the time of his release from the Navy in 1947, Commander Jones was at the R.N. Staff College, Greenwich. Recommendation for the M.I.D. reads: ‘Valuable services as the executive officer of “Kruger”, being the only lieut. for a considerable period and ability in controlling fire in action’. In the Naval Review of 1920 it is recorded: ‘The Royal Navy on the Caspian, 1918-19’ “At the last trip the first-lieutenant (Pitcairn-Jones) was told to haul down the flag of truce, which proved not to be a flag at all, but a pair of under-garments belonging to an old lady of 60 who was one of the crew of the barge.” With copied service paper and other research.
