The Australian Cricket Team, 1909’, team photograph by Bolland of Hanwell, London, 565 x 448mm. (image), framed and glazed. Autographed on the mount above the image by V.S. Ransford, Warren Bardsley, H. Carter, W.J. Whitty, P.A. McAlister, Albert Cotter, R. Hartigan, and J.A. O’Connor, and below the image by Victor Trumper, A.J. Hopkins, M.A. Noble, W.W. Armstrong, Syd Gregory, Frank Laver, and W. Carkeek, all in ink, with faint pencil signature of C.G. Macartney, presentation inscription at foot in ink ‘To Dr. A.K. Thomson with the compliments and best wishes of the Australian Cricket Team 1909.' This striking, giant-sized image was hung on the wall opposite Roger Hancock’s desk, surrounded by smaller team photos and scorecards. It shows what Sydney Pardon considered a great and much ‘under-rated’ team who ‘beat England in decisive fashion – not only winning two of the three Test matches that were played out, but having all the best of the drawn games at Manchester and the Oval … The method of placing the field became in Noble’s hand almost an exact science …. Armstrong at Lord’s and Birmingham, Macartney and Cotter at Leeds, and Laver at Manchester, equalling the best performances of the old bowlers …. Bardsley and Ransford were the heroes of the trip. Never have two Australian batsmen, coming to England for the first time, met with such extraordinary success …. Macartney as an all-round cricketer took the honours …. Carter, as an Australian wicket keeper, I should rank above Kelly, and therefore only second to Blackham.
