One of the greatest American works on trees and woods, it is: “illustrated by actual specimens, and being in this way an exhibition of nature itself. It possesses a peculiar and great interest never found in a press-printed book” (Hough). Romeyn B. Hough prepared the samples himself and self-published the work. It provides a unique record of American wood types, arranged geographically. Several parts in this section cover California and the Pacific Slope. This is a tremendously important work for ecologists as well as connoisseurs of American furniture and antiques. Each specimen is about 2x4½” in size and cut thinly enough to be partially translucent. This set is only very rarely found complete, presumably because it was published over a span of 40 years. Lot Amendments Condition: Ex-library from the Library of California Polytechnic School, San Luis Obispo, with bookplates, institutional ink stamps, and small hand-written "C.P.S." in white on each card and at head of slipcase spines. Varying wear to slipcases, Part XII with some rippling to cloth, a few parts lacking all or part of the closing clasps; chemise of Part VII lacking cloth backstrip. Text booklet lacking from Part VII, front wrapper detached on text booklet of Part I. Lacking 9 card mounts (#s 13, 17, 130, 135, 160, 184, 200, 228, 232); 2 mounts lacking one specimen (#s 55, 282); approximately 15 specimens with large chips or substantial portions lacking; a number of other samples with cracking or small chips; overall very good.
