Six pages with mounted gelatin silver print photographs. (8vo) 25x15 cm (9¾x6") original full embossed calf wtih design of an American Eagle atop star spangled arms with “Stanley” crossing the shield on a diagonal, modern rebacking to style. Laid in are an invitation addressed to J.T.P. Pechey signed by Henry Welcome, as well as a printed list of those "Present at the Banquet." The photographic portraits include posed images of Stanley, Lieutenant W. G. Stairs, Surgeon Thomas Heazle Parke, Captain Robert Henry Nelson, and Mr. A. J. Mounteney-Jephson. The 6th photograph depicts the testimonial shield and medallion. Upon the return from the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, Stanley and his officers were welcomed with a lavish banquet. This program/menu sets out the proceedings for the evening. The photographs of the explorers are followed by a description of the "Testimonial Shield," followed by the menu and the toast list. Five of the photographs are by Henry Van Dere Weyde, the profile portrait of Stanley is by John Fergus. A few of the committee members included Paul Du Chaillu, Henry Wellcome, P.T. Barnum, Bret Harte, J. McNeil Whistler, among other luminaries and other officials. Lot Amendments Condition: Some wear to binding, hinges repaired; very good. Item number: 269421
