The American Cricketer. A Journal Devopted to the Noble Game of Cricket . [volume XXII onwards with altered subtitle : Devoted to the Interests of Cricket, Golf and their Kindred Sports ]. Edited by F.H. Clarke, H.H. Cornish, Allen J. King. Philadelphia: Associated Cricket Clubs of Philadelphia, 28 June 1877-April 1929. 52 volumes bound in 17, 4° (296 x 217mm). Pictorial titles and part titles from vol. XIV 1891 onwards, decorative head-pieces. (Light soiling to early titles, vols. XVI, XIX-XXI and XXIV lack general or part titles, first number of vol. XXXIX lacking wrapper with part title and beginning on p. 3, severe but clean tears to vol. XIX, first two leaves of vol. XXV torn with loss, adjacent leaves also torn, other occasional tears and losses, dampstaining in several vols., old fold marks.) Modern brown half morocco, spine tooled in gilt and black with repeated American eagle motif, vol. XIII with rear wrapper bound in, original part wrappers generally bound in from volume XXII onwards (some tears and losses to wrappers). Provenance: purchased from J.W. McKenzie in 1978. A COMPLETE RUN WITH FEW DEFECTS OF THIS HIGHLY RARE AND HISTORICALLY VALUABLE AMERICAN SPORTS MAGAZINE . As volume 43 appears not to have been published, it was in effect 51 volumes published over 52 years. While American dynamism and that uncontainable desire to compete shows itself in every number, the magazine is international as well as national in outlook, containing the most varied articles on cricket by players and sports writers, many of whom are English. Between 1891 and 1914, the title-pages and part titles are extremely innovative in design and constitute some of the most memorable images in cricket publishing; it is also fascinating to see the interest gradually extending from cricket to take in other ball games such as golf and tennis. A true mine of information about the development of America sport at a crucial historical period. Padwick 4050.
