These classic Sherlock Holmes stories all appeared first in The Strand Magazine. "The Adventures..." with the first issue points having no name on the street sign to the front cover and with the word "Violent" on line 23 on p. 317, which was later corrected to "Violet." "The Memoirs..." appeared in Strand magazine from December 1892 to December 1893; the January 1893 appearance of CARD was suppressed by Doyle and did not appear in England until "His Last Bow" in 1917, although it slipped into the United States edition. De Waal D520 and D 596a; Sadleir 739 and 746; Gibson & Greene A10a and A14a - respectively. Lot Amendments Condition: Morocco spines sunned; original cloth spines bound in a bit darkened, rubbing to original cloth covers, Adventures' cloth covers somewhat bleached; otherwise an attractively leather-bound set, text and illustrations clean and fairly intact; very good to near fine overall.
