Place: Boston Publisher: Crosby, Nichols, Lee and Company Date: 1861 Description: 378 pp. With 12 wood-engraved plates by Charles Nahl. (8vo) 7¾x4½, original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Second Edition. Boston Issue. First published the previous year in San Francisco by Towne & Bacon. Based on Adams' own account, of this story of one of the legendary California pioneers and mountain men. Greenwood notes that "Adams dictated his memoirs to Hittell at the Pacific Museum in San Francisco. Adams made a hunting expedition to the Rocky Mountains by way of Walker River, and the Humboldt Mountains, to Salt Lake. After a short stay there he continued past Ft. Bridger to Ham's Fork and Smith's Fork returning to California in the summer of 1854..." Cowan regarded it as "probably the most popular work of its time issued in California," and Wagner -Camp explains that "In the course of Adams's adventures, he hunted in the Rocky Mountains, traveling east from California by way of the Walker River and the Humboldt Mountains to Salt Lake in 1854..."
