The 31 inch spadroon blade with 21 inch blued and gilt panel engraved with Federal eagle, florals and conventional panoplies and interspersed with two 2 inch panels reserved on plain steel and etched with florals. Base of blade marked on both sides Warranted. Gilt brass hilt of Widmann Type III, see page 186 of The American Eagle Pommel Sword by E. Andrew Mowbray. Downcurving shell with Federal spread eagle and shield; underside of crossguard stamped F.W. Widmann/Philada; knucklebow in the form of a column; ferrule molded with grapes and grape leaves; eaglehead pommel clutching the end of the knucklebow in it's beak; grip wrapped with copper wire. Brass scabbard engraved with eagle, oak leaves and acorns. Suspension ring mounts molded with grapes and leaves. Reverse maker stamped as hilt. Condition: Blade with some minor pitting and retaining 30-40% blued and gilt finish. Edge with eight deep nicks. Base of blade with some metal sprue to replace leather washer. Hilt retains generous traces of gilt finish. Scabbard with several shallow dents. See Illustration Note: Frederick W. Widmann emigrated from Germany to Philadelphia in 1816.
