TEXAS]. [LANGWORTHY, Asahel (d. 1835)]. The Constitution of the Republic of Mexico, and of the State of Coahuila & Texas. Containing also an Abridgement of the Laws of the General and State Governments, Relating to Colonization. With Sundry Other Laws and Documents, Not Before Published, Particularly Relating to Coahuila and Texas... New York: Ludwig & Tolefree, 1832. 8 o (226 x 148 mm). (Some pale marginal dampstaining.) Modern calf, gilt-lettered on upper cover. FIRST EDITION OF LANGWORTHY'S EDITION OF THE "FIRST TEXAS CONSTITUTION, AS A MEXICAN STATE" (Howes), adding considerably to earlier editions of the text. The text of the constitution first appeared in Spanish in 1827, followed by English translations published in Natchitoches (1827) and Chillicothe (1829). The present New York edition is considered the best textually, for its additions by Langworthy, who had travelled throughout Texas in 1831, and for the inclusion of an index. An important and early work on Texas, including documents relating to the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company, the grants to Wilson, Exter and Dominguez. There is a description of the grants made in 1831 to the Arkansas and Texas Land Company. Eberstadt 162:478; Howes C-504 ("aa"); Streeter Texas 1130.
