TEMPLE, Lieutenant Richard. Eight Views of the Mauritius Comprising the position of the British army, commanded by the Honble. Genl. J. Abercrombie, on the 29th. & 30th. of Novr. & 1st. of Decr. 1810, also of the town and harbour of Port Louis. [London: published by W. Haines, no date but plate imprints dated 1813, plates watermarked 1811]. Oblong 2° (330 x 507mm). Engraved throughout, title, 8 hand-coloured aquatint plates by J. Clark after Temple. (Light soiling to margins.) Original boards, paper label on upper cover with letterpress title, (rebacked in the 19th century with blue cloth, extremities scuffed, bumped and torn), 20th-century red cloth box, morocco title label. Provenance : Moncure Biddle (armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION, early issue with pre-publication watermarks. A fine visual record of the scenery of the island and the military and naval operation which led to the British seizing the island from the French. General Sir John Abercromby (1772-1817) landed on 29 November 1810 with a force of over 11,000 men, and after 'a smart action, which showed the French general that resistance was impossible... on 2 Dec. Decaen surrendered the island' ( DNB ) Abbey Travel I,293 (a late issue with 1830 watermarks); Tooley 481.
