Crane Date: 1884 Description: 1 volume extended to 2. Illustrated with plates and facsimiles. (4to) 8¼x7, brown half morocco, spine gilt with raised bands, top edges gilt. First Edition. Extra-Illustrated Copy. Superb, extra-illustrated copy; an engrossing tribute to the patriots of the Boston Tea Party. With about 55 extra portraits and plates (some hand-colored), an article, the prospectus for this book, and 15 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENTS relating to the Boston Tea Party bound-in, including those signed by Samuel Adams and by John Hancock, the Tea Party's two most important leading spirits. Documents and portraits are in most cases bound facing the passages in the book that are the biographies and/or the narratives of these men. Documents include: ADAMS, Samuel (1722-1803). Manuscript document signed ("S. Adams Presid.), Senate Chamber, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 17 May 1785. 1 page, 7½x5¾". Order to form a Committee "to inform his Hon the Leut. Govr and the Honble. Council of the Names of the Gentlemen elected yesterday as Senators agreeable to the Constitution", and then lists the ten men and their districts. HANCOCK, John (1737-1793). Manuscript document signed ("J Hancock"), Boston, 9 November 1772 to Ebenezer Hancock. 1 page, 4x6½". An order from John Hancock to his younger brother, Ebenezer, authorizing the delivery of a quantity of nails, dated just over a year before the Boston Tea Party. HUTCHINSON, Thomas (1711-1780). Document signed, Boston, 21 August 1762. Hutchinson was the very unpopular last Royal Governor of Massachusetts and a supporter of the Tea Tax. * BERNARD, Francis (1712-1779). Clipped signature. Bernard was Royal Governor of Massachusetts from 1760 to 1769. * PHILLIPS, William. Printed document signed, 5 July 1791. Phillips was a tea party participant, and accompanied Samuel Adams and John Hancock at the meeting at the Liberty Tree on 2 November, 1773. * PICO, Joshua. Manuscript bill, 1799. Pico was a Boston cooper and Tea Party participant. * BYLES, Mather. Signed inventory of books. Byles was a Tory whose house was attacked by Colonel Crane. * GORE, Christopher (1758-1827). Printed document signed, 12 December 1791. Gore would become Governor of Massachusetts and was the younger brother of Samuel Gore. * MELVILL, Thomas. Printed document signed as Inspector of the Port of Boston, 10 October 1796. Tea Party partipant. * WINSLOW, Joshua, Justice of the Peace, Boston, 10 August 1764. Document concerning a debt owed to Gilbert Deblois. Winslow and Deblois were both Loyalists. Winslow was one of the consignors of tea. * LLOYD, Henry, 12 December 1770. Accounting document signed. Lloyd was a Boston merchant. * Accounting document, dated October 1771, possibly signed by William Brattle, a Boston merchant. * COOPER, William. Manuscript notes from a meeting held at Faneuil Hall, Boston on 9 March 1801 addressed to William Cooper Town Clerk, who was also Town Clerk at the time of the Tea Party. Appears to be endorsed with Cooper’s signature. * GREENLEAF, Stephen. Expense account of Stephen Greenleaf to the Province of Massachusetts, from Boston, 28 December 1772. Greenleaf was High Sheriff. * GIBBONS, Thomas. Expense account for Thomas Gibbons to the Duke of Newcastle, for traveling expenses in the summer of 1771.
