Taylor--Vintage 1935
1 bottle per lot
Taylor--Vintage 1935 English bottled by Army & Navy. Bin-soiled and slightly loose label. Level base of neck Vintage note: A classic vintage bottled in King George VI's Coronation year, 1937. Similar harvest conditions to 1934 but smaller crop. Market slowly recovering - 15 shippers. The best ports still superb, with many years of life ahead. Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine Tasting note: Outstandingly the best 1935 and one of the greatest ports of this century. Tasted (and drunk) on 27 occasions since 1953. My notes describe its appearance as ranging from medium to very deep, but this might well result from variations of light in dining-rooms as well as different bottlings. The bouquet and taste more consistently marvellous: full, rich, spicy, touch of vanilla and liquorice, overall harmony, depth and power; still sweet, fairly full-bodied, almost chewy, with the inimitable Taylor backbone, great length and ethereal aftertaste. Perfection. A pair in 1991, Oporto-bottled and recorked in 1986. One was horrid: cod liver oil and malt, the other superb. Perfection, at peak, 6 stars, twice in 1992. Three very recent notes: despite a rather smelly cork that broke, a superb wine, powerful, amazing length and flavour, at a dinner party at home June 2000. Another glorious bottle, losing depth of colour; nose slightly smoky, Spanish root; great length and residual power - dining in the Dairy, Waddeson Manor, and, with classic bouquet drying out a little but with inimitable Taylor backbone. Superb. Last noted at Bill Baker's, Jan 2001. At best ***** but don't leave it another 20 years Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine 1 bottle per lot
