Tarocchini of Bologna, circa 1810, Milan, Ferdinando Gumppenberg, 62 of 62 cards, woodblock printed and stencil colored, king of bastoni contains tax stamp of the Kingdom of Lombardy under French rule, 25 centesimi for private use (valid 1807-1815) and black rectangular stamp, "Pe Case" (private house) on 6 of danari. Trumps and courts are double ended, Italian card titles, Arabic numerals on cards 5 to 16, unnamed Italian suits, two indices, square corners. The first four unnumbered trumps are named Affricano, they wear a feathered hat and are poised to shoot an arrow from their bow, two wear a feathered loin cloth and two wear fur, Matto, representing The Fool, is a harlequin playing the fiddle, Bagattino for The Magician is Papageno, the bird seller from Mozart's The Magic Flute dressed in feathers and a bird cage on his back, other unusual cards are 9 Sforza, a kind of Hercules forcing open the mouth of a lion, 9 Vecchio, an old man with a crutch, Luna standing next to a globe of the world, and Mondo depicted by Hermes in winged helmet holding a caduceus and sack. Backs are an overall pattern of wavy red and blue lines. Size 4 9/16 in. (11.5 cm) high, 2 1/16 in. (5.2 cm) wide. A few cards slightly worn, overall in generally fine condition. Kaplan II, 348.
