Jacques Cassini (1677-1756), was born at the Paris observatory where his father Giovanni was in charge, and succeeded the latter upon his death in 1712. Giovanni had discovered four Saturnian satellites and the division in Saturn's ring; the new knowledge thus gained is put to practical use in the son's work.
