Oblong 4to, 186 x 227 mm., contemporary calf, sides blind-panelled with blind-stamped arabesque cartouche at center, edges stained red, rebacked, endpapers renewed, title a bit creased, fraying to lower edges of the 2 preliminary leaves, some soiling, occasional dampstaining, some worming to lower margins, last 11 leaves with lwoer margins repaired, obscuring a few words in index . FIRST AND ONLY EDITION, 2255 woodcuts of plants, fruits, etc., most printed two to a page, captions in Latin and German. Nissen BBI 1932; Pritzel 9094. This assembly of the Tabernaemontanus/Bassaeus cuts, first used in the 1588 Tabernaemontanus herbal, was inspired by Plantin's editions of Lobel's Plantarum seu stirpium icones , a similar type of woodcut sample-book.
