SYLVESTER, Joshua (c. 1563-1618). Lachrimae lachrimarum; or, the distillation of teares shede for the untymely death of the incomparable Prince Panaretus . [London: H. Lownes, 1612]. 4° (90 x 135mm), 16 ll., in verse. Xylographic title printed in white on black with Prince Arthur's arms at head, verso of each subsequent leaf printed xylographically with the arms repeated on all except the last, verso of last leaf with Prince of Wales feathers in white on black, recto of the same leaves within mourning borders with woodcut skeletons. (Title cropped at lower margin with partial loss of the author's surname.) Tan morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, gilt-stamped with Prince of Wales feathers and the initials 'HP,' gilt edges. Second edition, distinguishable from the first by the absence of the colphon and device on verso of the last leaf. Prince Henry (1594-1612), eldest son of James I of England by his Queen, Anne of Denmark, was created Prince of Wales in 1610. The death of this popular heir to the throne from typhoid fever just two years later became the occasion for an extrardinary number of elegies and lamentations. One of the poems in this collection is 'The Princes Epitaph, written by his Highness servant Walter Quin,' while the third edition was to include an elegy by John Donne. STC 23577.
