SWINBURNE, Algernon Charles (1837-1909). 'O Virgin Mother of Gentle Days and Nights' . [London: 1865]. 2° leaf (327 x 202 mm), with lithographic facsimile of Swinburne's sonnet on recto, [?]proof impression lacking the word 'ungrown' in penultimate line (slightly soiled), blue cloth case. Provenance : F.A. Sandys (inscribed at head 'This lithographed copy of a poem by Swinburne was found amongst the papers of F.A. Sandys'). ONE OF VERY FEW SURVIVING COPIES. This sonnet was written by Swinburne to accompany F. Sandys' painting, Gentle Spring , exhibited in the Royal Academy of Arts Exhibition, 1865. Not in the Ashley Catalogue. SWINBURNE, A.C. Siena . London: John Camden Hotten, 1868. 8° (171 x 110mm). Contemporay blue morocco, original orange wrappers bound in. Provenance : John A. Spoor (bookplate). COPYRIGHT EDITION, LIMITED TO 6 COPIES, distinguishable from the Wise forgery by the full point after 'Piccadilly' on title. This poem appeared in Lippincott's Magazine (New York, June 1868, pp. 622-629). To secure the copyright in England an edition of six copies was printed for Hotten, the British Library copy being received on 27 May, 1868. cf. Carter and Pollard, An Enquiry p. 287. Ashley, VI, p.74; and another 5 works by Swinburne including The Bride's Tragedy (London: printed privately, 1889), The Brothers (London: 1889), The Ballad of Bulgarie (London: printed for private circulation, 1893), all uniformly bound in contemporary polished calf gilt and with bookplate of John A.
