III: Letters to the King, the Prince of Orange, The Chief Ministers of State, and other persons ], London: for J. Tonson, 1700 [vol. III: for Tim Goodwin, 1703], 3 volumes, 8°, engraved portrait of William Temple after Peter Lely in volume one (vols. one and II lightly browned and spotted). Contemporary panelled speckled calf, spines with raised bands and red morocco lettering pieces gilt (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance : SIR WILLIAM TRUMBULL (armorial bookplates). FIRST EDITION. Rothschild (vols. I and II only) 2401; Teerink 469 and 472. The third volume is particularly scarce. IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY. Sir William Trumbull (1639-1716), notable lawyer and politician, rose to the position of Secretary of State under William III. Dryden testified that Trumbull was the moving spirit behind his translation of Virgil. He was also Pope's first patron. TEMPLE, William. To which is added an Essay upon the State and Settlement of Ireland , London: for Thomas Bennet, 1701. 8°, 4-pages of advertisements at end. Contemporary panelled speckled calf, spine gilt in compartments with red morocco lettering-piece. Provenance : WILLIAM TRUMBULL (armorial bookplate). A scarce, unauthorised third volume, against which Swift protested with the publication of his own third volume in 1703 included above. (4)
