Initial leaf of mock advertisements. (Some dampstaining and marginal soiling, Y1r with signature and catch-word poorly impressed, without final blank.) Contemporary blind-tooled calf, covers with double fillet enclosing a central panel with flowerhead at corners (rebacked, preserving old spine and manuscript paper label, some restoration at corners.) (Half-title and blank verso of final leaf soiled, address to the reader misbound after the dedication to Pope.) FIRST EDITION of this one-shilling verse pamphlet. Although Swift denied authorship, it has strong resemblances to his Verses on the Death of Doctor Swift printed in 1739, and whether it is actually by Swift, a plagiarism by Laetitia Pilkington, or alternatively by Pope, remains uncertain. Title vignette of bust on a pedestal. (Title soiled, slightly torn and with small repairs on verso of old fold mark, first leaf of text remargined, small hole in gutter of B1-D1.) Early 20th-century brown half morocco and cloth, edges gilt (joints lightly rubbed). Second London edition, one of two variants. Swift entrusted the publication of his manuscript in London to Dr. William King who not only made extensive cuts but inserted 61 lines from the Life and Genuine Character . Irritated by these changes, Swift arranged for the publication of a more authoritative edition in Dublin containing 484 lines, compared with the 381 lines in the London edition.
